NHS Services in Calderdale

I condemn the threats to local health services caused by the Tory-Lib Dem government.

I call on NHS decision makers to keep urgent care services like Calderdale's Walk-In Centres and A&E department open.

The national crisis in Accident and Emergency (A&E) is already hitting Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Trust.

- Safe Staffing: a survey by the BBC found that our local Trust is struggling to recruit staff – with more than one in ten posts vacant, our A&E has the 20th worst staffing level out of more than 100 Hospital Trusts surveyed.

- Longer waiting times: Even during the summer, when pressures should be less, our local hospitals are struggling to meet the 4-hour wait target.

- Other services under threat: the Walk In centres in Halifax and Todmorden are facing reduced services, making it more likely that patients will go straight to A&E.

Now we're waiting for proposals from the 'strategic review' of health services. Elsewhere, Hospital Trusts are proposing to close or merge A&E departments - including the closure of A&E departments in nearby Dewsbury.
